I missed the first half, due to American Idol. When I switched the channel, I was seeing a young Wing Tak already seeking refuge in Au Yeung Martial Arts/TCM school. I would appreciate some write up on what happened in the beginning between Tak, his son, Kenneth and the gang?

And what has he done to deserve such insults from the nosy noisy bitchy young wife of Biu? She just wouldn't let go of him, making he feel inferior and of course a great reason to kill her later. Did they have a relationship in the past?

I remember Biu was also very harsh on him, asking him what is the best thing he can teach his students and whatever he replied Biu scoffed at it until Biu said "Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! The best thing you can teach your students is ethics! Without ethics there is no point in teaching and no one can learn!!". And then he reminded Tak "Remember you are not my student here, but an employee!"

Pause here.

Very easy for Biu to say that and so discriminatory. Tak doesn't have chance to be decent; he has to be a villain with such insults and all thrown his way!

Anyway Tak was very angry at his predicament and he fought off his unhappiness by doing some major kung fu and he accidentally destroyed or rather poked at some female clothings thus the clothing is ruined. Then Shing walked to him and he talked to Shing his Winner of Martial Arts Scholarship (sorry for the bad translation!) during Qing Dynasty and then you kinda remember Qing Dynasty was no more. So he was prolific and he talked about the forbidden city with awe and deep respect, relivig his glorious past and Shing, being the nice guy said "You will find that glory again one day! Your talent will never be wasted" but why then is he in such a destitute state? Someone said to me since he no longer has that position and no longer Qing Dynasty he would have lost such privileges. I disagree. There are remnants of respectability and he could have ridden on that past glory for his new school so he must have done something to have lost that.

Next scene bitchy young wife came running in an immediately shouted "WHO DESTROYED MY DRESS?" and since no one could admit it what them, she immediately zeroed in on Tak and Tak denied it. He probably didn't even know he did it so I find him somewhat the victim here. Biu and Shing came in and asked "What is going on?" and wife cried "THIS IDIOT! HE DESTROYED MY CLOTHES!! I already knew he was trouble! These I saw them grow up so I know them and they respect me but this scum...I knew he was a scum and up to no good. He was just angry, I noticed his gaze when I insulted him and he had anger! So he took it out on my expensive clothes!" and Tak said "I didn't!" and Biu said "Let this stop here. Forget about this!" and the wife cried "WHAT? NOOOOO!! My expensive clothes!!" and Biu said "I said enough!!" and Wife went on and on and on until she stormed out.

Pause here.

You know what this scene shows me? It shows me Biu absolutely has no control over his wife. He is supposed to be a respected big time kung fu master and yet here is this young wife making a whole lot of ruckus even when he told her to shut up at least twice, in front of his entire academy. Can you have respect for a guy who can't even control his wife?

And why show he has a young wife? WHY? What purpose does it serve and with a wife so bitchy? It just shows what a fool of an old man he is and does not serve to build up the integrity of his character. At this point I felt the writing was weird.

Back to present time and I kinda shouted ENOUGH WITH THE PARRARELLS!

In present I finally got less confused as to how many children Wai Lan has. Theres;

Cheung the eldest. Tong the 2nd. Man Kuen twins with Leung, she being 3rd and him 4th. Yan the 5th son and Ngan Ming is the adopted daughter.

Cheung (the uncle with the money) is Wai Lan's brother.

And my question is why so many children? Such a hard time remembering their names and characters and with so many people in so few episodes, some will be caricatures which is what Kuen and Leung are.

Anyway Leung was in love with a pretty girl whom I suspect is the daughter of Tak who will eventually call for Yan. World is small in TVB, good guys always fall for the bad guy's daughters. So he went after her and fell into a sewage pond and came home very smelly, ran to Kuen's room and used up her expensive perfumes and powders (she works in a dept store). Everybody knew what happened and laughed at him, and Kuen was angry he used her stuff and chased around him and Kenneth tried to restore order but he and his uncle laughed at him and the uncle even took out Leung's love letters and read them out.

The point of this scene is they are close knit, they can joke about one another, depended on one another and all I can see is such a noisy messy scene. Shirley Yeung was particularly awful.

Next thing they know Leung ran away from home. Afraid to let their mother know they went in frantic search for him.

Pause here.

I have this feeling Wai Lan is such a non-participating family member. She is never home, rarely interacts with her children and so I cannot believe she is their mother. In fact I find old Wai Lan so underused.

Anyway they found him hiding with a friend and intent on leaving the state to work elsewhere and this is when the scene became extra excruciating for many reasons.

So they hurt his feelings, so they could just say "Brother, we are sorry! Forgive us!" but instead suddenly Kenneth turn on the waterworks, with tears brimming in his eyes said "Leung, listen to me. You all were too young to remember, but I could remember mother waiting fruitlessly for father to return everytime she heard the bicycle bell's ring. Mother has lost her husband, our brother, her father and stepmother, she can't lose you too!"

and I was thinking is that necessary? So dramatic. Then everyone starts begging him, and Leung cried "You all insulted me! Just because I am short, can't I be in love? Just because I am ugly, does it mean I can't find love?" and even the adopted daughter was crying, Shirley was howling "Fine! I will not ask you for money for the stuff you used! Come home!" and even the youngest brother was crying and in the end Leung said "Ok!" and they ran home happily like children.

Pause here.

I know that scene is to show that they're so close they have no trouble taking the mickey out of the other. But that scene was so dramatic to the point it was ridiculous. It need not be like mother will be hurt, etc in such a dramatic fashion. And Leung was simply angry they insulted him, mocked him and when Kenneth started crying with that dialogue, I felt that scene was so out of place. The dialogue was weird, the set up was weird and the acting was noisy and too many people.

And frankly I can't remember what happened after so I can't remember the trailer for next episode.

My problem with this series is first and foremost the story. The story is there but the script is terrible. I find certain scenes too OTT and does not establish certain basic scenes like the siblings' closeness and just jumped straight to them being so close. I blame the constant back and forth scenes. The series should just start properly, show us the siblings when they were young.

And Wai Lan is such a non participating character. She is hardly ever in one scene with the children, making me feel like she was so distraught over what happened in the past that being away from them is her way to protect herself emotionally but that is reading too much into the character which is simply not developing at all.

Tong bears the brunt of the responsibility and he is the respected well loved older brother who took upon himself to care for the family. And he is close to his siblings. That we all know. I have no problem with the characterisation but I have problem seeing Kenneth Ma in this role. He seems too silly, too goofy to be the responsible and sometimes stern master. He gets no help from the awful script. But Kenneth himself lacks that heroicness to display this character. He plays him earnest which is good, Kenneth has this nice guy quality but does he have that leadership quality? I don't think so. And it doesn't help his acting was not just inadequate but wholly inappropriate in many scenes, especially that one when he suddenly cried with that out of this world dialogue for something so darn petty. Kenneth does not command my attention, I find my attention wandering away. He is a cute guy, but he is badly cast as Tong who at episode 3 is also still underdeveloped considering his character has the most exposure since episode 1 making me think his Tong is the lead character in this series.

Dominic Lam is to me wrongly cast as the villain. He does not display the dissatisfaction and deeply helt hatred like "ng kam sum" sort of feelings well, at all. I find his performance too understated, he a tad too old and kung fu as usual terrible. More like aerobic session.

Overall I am still bitterly disappointed with this series which has yet to fulfil the promise of the trailer. It is noisy, messy and badly written.

Here's hoping the next episode will be better.

  1. Yan (Stephen Wong) is the 3rd son. The hierarchy should be

    Cheung (Kevin)
    Tong (Kenneth)
    Yan (Stephen)
    Kuen (Shirley)
    Leung (Jazz)
    Ming (Natalie)

TVB relationship chart state the relationship between Yan and Kuen is 'hing mui'.

  1. Thanks Kidd for the clarification.

    Too many children!

  1. I find myself liking Dominic's understated acting over Kenneth and Shirley's overstated acting. I hate the Tavia style villains who shouted like crazy and make bulging eyes in public.

I might get roasted for saying this but to me Kenneth is like Tavia, they are not terrible actors but are acting in a scene to scene basis instead of a wholly character. He's also like that in his new series and same as this series again he's getting more scene exposure than other actors.

  1. You see, flashback to Beyond The Realm..the point where I start to question Tavia's acting.

Charmaine is criticised for being a yawnfactor and Tavia is hailed for outshining Charmaine. Of course Tavia will outshine Charmaine, Sam Ho doesn't have much to do besides walking here and there chanting her goodwill speech while Tavia has lots of action scenes to utilize her painly overstated acting and score both pity points and score points from audience. While audience hate Sam Ho for being lucky. Still I think Charmaine although far from perfect stayed true to her character and I applaud her for not fighting to be 'the most shining character in the series' and let Tavia gets the glory.

That's why Shirley should not shout like crazy. I think that's why I don't like series like this and HOG and Moonlight because everyone is trying their hardest to be over the top to get the most attention lmao

  1. That above was me: Athena

  1. Athena, I kinda agree with you but for BTROC I never thought Tavia's role was that attention grabbing. I thought her character was such a failed villain. But it was a terribly awfully written series anyway.

  1. Shirley should be casted in roles that forbid her to shout and get over excited.

Her character in 'Brink of Law' is good. She's a scheming girl who is good on the outside and bad on the inside. She didn't need to shout in that role and she did good.

She's also decent in 'Devil's Disciple' where she plays a gentle girl.

  1. She was kinda OTT as the villain. Very forced sort of acting. As a nice quiet girl, I find her rather pretentious. Sorry lar, she is just a bad bad bad actress.

  1. Watch a bit on episode 3.

The episode start at the end of episode 2 i.e. Wing Tak made his first appearance. He reprimanded his son for being rude to the senior and than said to Wai Lan, 'I swear to you again that I did not anything wrong towards you family'. Tong butt in saying angrily 'Master Wing, if you are going to swear, please swear harsher. I said what you said what. If you have wronged my family, you old 'chuk sang' will die horribly (mou tim jong, mou dei jong) and your little 'chuk sang' will also have a bad life and you will not have any descendants (juet ji juet suen). You swear this!

Wing Tak didn't reply him and just told his son, 'let's go'.

Then, Wai Lai started to related her story again. She said she has thought about it many times. Is it fated that they met Wing Tak? She said "If Jeung and Tong have not caused father to hurt his kneecap, we wouldn't have gone to Siu Heng to buy medicine in his place. If the medicine shop owner's son hasn't hurt his arm, we wouldn't have stayed back to cure him and wouldn't have delayed our return trip to the next day. If the window at our seat was not jammed and Shing afraid that I would catch a cold, we wouldn't have moved to another carriage. If we have not moved to another carriage, we would not have met him and all the bad things wouldn't have happened.'

All this while, scene of 1912 was shown. We see Jeung and Tong playing a ball and Biu stepped on it and fell. Then we see Shing and Wai Lan attending to a young man in a medicine shop. Then we see Shing and Wai Lan going on a train and Shing trying to close the window. Then, we see Shing and Wai Lan moving to another carriage and we see the young Tak coming in.

    Narration ends.

Still in 1912, on the train.

Shing and Wai Lan saw 2 policemen asking Tak what was in his bag. Tak said it's just normal clothes. The 2 police insisted he opened the bag but he refused. So, they forcefully open the bag and saw a Qing Dynasty official garment in it. They laughed at him, asking him whether he's an actor. He told them he's a 'jong yuen' and that's the official garment. The police said Tak look like a thief instead of a 'jong yuen' (they said he looks 'chak mei chak ngan'). Tak said, 'jong yuen' has 2 types, I'm a 'mo jong yuen'. The police then said now is 'man gok', this item of the 'fung gin' society, they need to confiscate. Tak refused to let them take it away and fought with them and the police threaten have him executed by firing squad (cheung bai). Shing then intervened and said Tak is just a poor chap trying to earn a living and hope the police can let him go. One police was initially very rude to Shing too, but, other recognised Shing. Shing and Biu has helped cure his mother of some illness before and he was very grateful to Shing. So, he let Tak go as a favour to Shing.

After the police were gone, Shing introduced himself and Tak introduced himself back.

    Then flashback to 1935.

  1. I skip the part after the flashback in the train. It was something to do with Tong and Dr.Chan. Will watch it and tell you later. But, I watch the part in Wing Tak's home.

Wing Tak was scolding Man Kwan, but, he told his son he was not angry with him for changing the ingredient from 'ngau wong' to 'hong wong'. He was angry with his failure to handle the aftermath badly. He should have just gave a lot of money to the victims and ask them to change their statement, then do lots of promotion activities to change the reputation back from bad to good. Man Kwan said this will cost a lot of money. His dad said the money can get back when the reputation is back. Tak also said Man Kwan is not smart enough. He should have mix the cheap medicine with the genuine on instead of changing all of it. Ask him to learn to be smarter because the family business will need to be pass to him.

Then, they moved downstairs and we saw Kara Hui for the first time. The whole family was in the living room. The younger daughter ran to the dad and manja him. Tak teases 'someone said she will get 90 marks for her exams, but, she only got 83. Where has the 7 marks gone to?'. And the daughter replied that she has tried her best, she studied every night until late.
Then he observed his elder daughter was quiet and look angry. He said to his elder daughter, 'I'm black face because someone is not 'sang sing', but, why do you look unhappy?' And Dr.Wing said a lot of the patients in the hospital said they became ill after eating our pills, you have to do something'. Man Kwan then asked her not to say anymore and said he will take all the pills to the shop front and burn them there and everyone who bring in an empty box of the pill will be generously compensated. Dr.Wing was successfully placated and she let her younger brother go this time saying 'You really have to do what you say, ok?'

  1. Sounds like a doting father, with only his son knowing his true colours. So Kara Hui was out in ep 3. But so little role. Can cast anyone in it.

  1. I understand what you said about the scene of them asking Leung to go home. Those sad stories and crying really are unnecessary. All Leung need is for them to say 'Sorry, we are wrong to hurt your feelings. We won't do it again.' The scriptwriter might not mean to convey this, but, those crying and sad stories look like guilt-tripping to me. Only Kuen said the right thing. She's the only one who said something related to Leung i.e. asking him to come home, saying she doesn't need him to pay the 30 cents anymore and promising not tease him about this matter again. But, none of them said 'sorry'.

  1. I actually laughed in that scene where the camera shifts to Kenneth and he suddenly had this eyes full of tears and then said what he said and I was like A doesn't connect to B sort of script!

  1. Watch more liao.

A bit of correction. Dr.Wong also told her dad, she has talk to Man Kwan about the pills many time. Man Kwan said he has said it many times the pills have no problem. But, he has discuss with father and to make the people more 'on sam', he will burn the pills in the store front and compensate anyone who take the pill box in.

We move to Dr.Chan and Tong eating in a hawker store. Dr.Chan said he want to go away and said his son already ran away, so, where he (Dr.Chan) go also never mind and he thank Tong for helping him.

Then Tong saw Leung and Yan riding bicycles with sign saying they 'jang yi si yeuk'. They purposely ride near 3 school girls, one of them is Yau Yau (Wing's youngest daughter). They also purpose pretend to nearly hit Yau Yau so that they can talk to Yau Yau. Leung pretend to be Yan's sifu, said they are going to cure who and who.
After they left, Yau Yau said the little sifu is cute. Her friends said he's short and all and Yau Yau said not him but the student who even scolded by his sifu also smile.

Leung and Yan on the way back met Tong who asked them what they are doing with his medicine box and they both ran.

    Flashback to 1912

Biu was walking with one hand on his back. A villager was pushing his bike and another holding him. Shing, Lan, Fah rush to him. The villager said the dogs there running around causing Biu to fall from his bike. Fah said he's not young anymore, but, still want to go up mountain and go to villages to 'jang yi si yeuk' and need to look after the shop and lock himself inside the room to make medicine. He should let Shing do it and if Shing cannot do all, they can find someone to help. Biu said, 'you thing it's easy to find who can touch my medicine?' and quote the phrase 'sau hap mou yan gin..' then his back pain intensify and Shing piggy back him home.
Then, we see Tak, Biu, Shing, Fah and Lan in the living room. Shing introduced Tak to Biu saying this is the person I've told you many times about. Biu said he is already old and should retire. Shing need make medicine and treat people, so, I need someone to oversea the kungfu learning of the student and ask him can he do it. Tak said he will do his best. Wai Lan put in "Father, I've told you before that Brother Tak is past Qing 'mo jong yun'. He's chosen among 800 people'. Biu said, I don't care you are 'jong yuan' or 'jong bin'. I employ you to teach student and him what would he the first thing you said to your student?

I think this part is the part where you start watching.

  1. Also, one thing vote noticing. When Tak was practicing kungfu and remembering the past, he heard Fah's voice saying 'I see you. Even one decent clothing also doesn't have. I'll give you 7.5 cent. You go and buy some clothes'. But, in actual fact, Fah only said 'I'll give you 7.5 cent. You go and buy some clothes'. So, in his mind, Fah's insult is worse than what it actually is. I don't know if this is intentional.

Tong inherited his sarcastic way of talking from Biu, but, he's not even half as bad as Biu. Biu's way of speaking is really harsh and insulting. He's a good kind man, but, he never give anyone face when he talk. Shing, Lan and his other students who followed him since they were young and know his ways can stomach it. But, a new person like Tak would be hard to stomach his words.

"and Biu said "I said enough!!" and Wife went on and on and on until she stormed out."

You remembered a bit wrongly here. Biu did not let her go on and on.
Fah refused to let go after Biu said not to speak of this issue again. Fah cried and said 'this clothes I specially ask some to buy from Suzhou, and this one you gave me for my birthday'. Biu said 'I already said not to speak about this anymore'. Fah still refused to let go and said 'How come my clothes suddenly torn'. Biu tried to offer an explanation and said could be the cats that ran around at night. Fah was unconvinced and said 'can cats flying?' and keep on and on until Biu said 'I've already said not to speak of this issue again. Anyone who speak of this issue again I will slap her mouth!'. This shut up the wife.

On the sibling interaction part, for this episode, I how they show the closeness of Kuen and Leung. In earlier episodes they were only shown bickering. But, this episode, it was shown that Kuen and Leung were actually very closed. Leung will ask Kuen to help him write love letters and Kuen will tell Leung her heart's secret.

  1. "I actually laughed in that scene where the camera shifts to Kenneth and he suddenly had this eyes full of tears and then said what he said and I was like A doesn't connect to B sort of script!"

Come to think of it, yes, it's true. It's like chicken and duck talk.
Leung: You all made fun of me. Step on me. Even laugh at my love letters..
Tong (sad face): Mother lost her father, stepmother, husband and son. You are too young then, but, I remember how sad she is.
Leung: It's you all who cause he to run away. Short cannot love some one? Short cannot woo girls? You all just step on me..
Ming: You listen to me. When I ran away at that time, mother look for me and she beat me. She didn't say a word. But, I know she's afraid of losing us.
